When Russell T. Davies announced he was leaving the helm of Doctor Who, a franchise that he resurrected over four stunning series, there was speculation that the next Doctor would be played by gay actor Russell Tovey.

Davies, himself gay, was also the creator of the original Queer As Folk series, and suggested Tovey for the role.
